Ledbury Archery Club

Target and Clout archery for all

Archery – FAQ

Please note that, for the time being, restrictions due to Coronavirus mean that only limited shooting by members, in a strictly controlled manner, is possible at this time. There can be no Have-a-Go events, Taster Sessions, Beginners Courses or Competitions under these circumstances. People interested in taking up Archery are welcome to contact the club in order to register their interest for future events when restrictions are further eased, although at the present time we do not know when this will be.

The great thing about Archery, unlike many sports, is that almost anyone can become a great Archer – all it takes is practice!

You don’t have to be competitive by nature – many find Archery a relaxing, contemplative sport, but for those with a competitive streak there are regular local and national competitions.

Do I have to be ‘sporty’ to try Archery?

Don’t worry if you’re not especially ‘sporty’ – you don’t have to be really fit or strong to be a great Archer – and it’s a popular sport for those with disabilities too.

How often would I be expected to come and shoot?

Some of our Club members come regularly (twice a week), others with commitments elsewhere come when they can – although you will get better if you are able to shoot regularly.

At what age can I start shooting with Ledbury Archery Club?

Ledbury Archery Club welcomes those of all ages and abilities to ‘have a go’ – this will give you an idea of whether Archery is for you.

Club membership is for those aged 12 yrs or over and there is no max. age limit.

Is it safe?

Naturally there are strict rules and guidelines for Archery – designed to keep you, other Archers and spectators safe. Archery is actually one of the safest sports in the UK today.

Follow the rules and listen to your fellow Archers and the risk is minimal. All Club members have to learn basic safety in the Beginner’s Course.

Each Club will have a qualified First Aider and follows current legislation regarding Safeguarding.

How much does it cost?

Compared to many sports, Archery is relatively inexpensive.

We hold ‘have a go’ sessions at local events from as little as £2 for 6 arrows.

A taster session (generally around 1.5 hours) with tuition from our own Archery GB qualified Coach is just £10, and a full Beginners Course (10 hrs) costs £40 for juniors and £50 for adults.

Ledbury Archery Club annual membership is only £69 for Juniors and £115 for Adults which includes membership to Archery GB and the County and Regional associations.

What kit do I need?

You don’t need any kit when starting out – our Club has all the training and safety equipment you need. Once you’ve completed a Beginner’s Course and paid your membership fees, you can borrow Club kit until you know what you need, then you can get your own kit to suit your style and ability. We will help you by providing all the information you need before you go shopping!
